Short & Medium Range Low Power Radios - Why you DO NOT need a license
Low power (0.5 watts) two-way radios operate on 8 UHF frequencies that have been issued for general on-site, short range use by OFCOM, a department of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). These frequencies have been allocated to a pan European service called PMR446. In the UK, there is no restriction on where you can use these frequencies and they are programmed into the radios at time of manufacture.

Long Range High Power Radios - Why you DO need a license
High power (1-25 watts) two-way radios operate on either VHF or UHF radio frequencies that are issued and regulated by OFCOM. In order to transmit on these frequencies, you are required to have a license issued by OFCOM. The benefits of a licensed frequency tend to be greater range, less interference from other users and a greater feature set built into the radios.
These frequencies are allocated to businesses only, on a case-by-case basis. In the UK, there is a restriction on where you can use these frequencies and once granted by OFCOM, they are programmed into your radios by Audiolink.
